Don Winslow. The Power of the Dog

discovered the power of dog Don Winslow on the blog The Mansion on the Hill where the author was an enthusiastic review on this novel. This is an ambitious book as Winslow makes a journey through thirty years of drug trafficking in the United States and Mexico. To investigate this sordid world is documented and found more shit than all the world to pick up shovels. In the preface, the novelist also Fresán Rodrigo tells us what one American critic wrote about the novel: "If ten percent of the power of the dog were true, it would be horrifying. That ninety percent can be true is almost unbearable. " The writer did a commendable job of research and novel with success. It may be relatively easy to document and gather information but not so much write a novel like this. For that you have to have talent to spare narrative and Winslow. And while the documentary work can be simple no less dangerous in view of the topic it touches.

The Power of Raw dog is a novel written directly, without ceremony, delving into the wound. It is very violent but that violence is not free, you believe it, which is disturbing. The author himself admits in an interview he found the process exhausting and depressing. And it is not surprising because everything revolves around the drug is tremendous. The relationship between drug policy and South American countries and the United States is there, explained in great detail. And frightened and disgusted. But besides being a novel that reads like history is what really catches the author's ability to create characters of flesh and blood, real, with its many contradictions caught in an impossible world to change. The DEA agent Art Keller , cold murderer Callan, the father revolutionary stop the high-flying prostitute Nora .... Characters attractions for Winslow worked so well that makes you feel sympathy for them. And why make it easy.

A Winslow has been compared with James Ellroy and may be a good reference but personally I think less schematic Winslow and sharper than Ellroy, richer descriptions, characters and plots. Of course the dog to me looks as good as the best Ellroy novel, which for me is still LA Confidential. In this interview Don Winslow says he is in negotiations for an HBO miniseries based on this monumental novel. The result can be an apotheosis but I can not believe everything that is told in the novel appears on the screen of any citizen. Too strong. But who knows? Maybe I am naive and live in society as hypocritical and cynical that this is more than assimilated.
